Day 10

November 8, 2021

This morning we had great views of mesas as we descended plateaus in eastern New Mexico:

The scrub you see in the following picture is typical of the terrain in western New Mexico and northeastern Texas:

Our first stop today was a visit to Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX.  It's really a crazy sculpture.  Ten Cadillacs are buried nose-down in a field at the same angle as the Cheops Pyramid.  The cars span the successive generations of the car line up to 1974 when the sculpture was created.  You can see evolution of their tailfins.  Weird, but interesting.  There's a vendor selling spray paint, and people love to spray all kinds of things on the cars.  The spray paint is now so thick that the metal underneath must be well preserved!

We ate lunch at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo:

They're famous for offering a free 72-ounce steak to anyone who can eat the whole thing.  We didn't take the challenge!  Here we are at our table:

It's a really big place with a two-story dining room, which is already decorated for Christmas.  In the picture, ours is the booth behind the guy in the pink shirt:

Andy took a respite after lunch:

I tried to wrestle (not rustle!) the big steer.  But he would not be steered!

Between Amarillo and Wichita Falls, we got an alert that the tire needed air.  That's the first time since Seattle that the tire needed air, so the leak is really slow.  Andy aired it up with a portable compressor he bought.  You can see by looking at the tires how dirty the car is from when we started!

We're spending the night in Terrell, TX to make an easier hop home tomorrow.  We haven't decided what to do on the way yet.  We anticipate arriving home in Ocean Springs sometime tomorrow night.  Stay tuned for the final (maybe!) chapter on the morrow.

Thanks for reading!
